Why is NREGA proposed and its likely benefits
NREGA – नरेगा There are a large number of individuals in India who are living below the poverty line. All these people are not even educated which makes it difficult for them to find a suitable work. It is making their life difficult as they can’t even make their children’s educate due to the increasing financial burden. This makes it necessary to provide financial relief to those individuals so that they can work over the development of their family.
With the rapid advancement of technology, the need for unskilled workers has reduced substantially. It requires developing a kind of work where even unskilled people can contribute and earn their livelihood. So, what is NREGA? It is a scheme provided by the government with the name of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (NREGA) for providing job opportunities to them. Later it was renamed as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
The significance of NREGA for the rural population
It is quite evident that there will be a large number of individuals in a rural area who are unskilled. They are unable to find the job which is relevant to them. With this, they will not be able to develop further due to the financial problem which they are facing. This will require giving them basic financial help where they can perform and generate their livelihood income.
In regard to this government of India has started NREGA for the purpose to uplift these individuals financially. Under this scheme, they will be getting an unskilled work for a minimum duration of 100 days. This is provided as a social security measure which even comes under Indian Labour law for providing them “right to work”. It will help them to develop themselves financially for their upliftment in various sections of their life. The portal for the same is nrega.nic.in.
The act was mainly proposed by Narasimha Rao during the period of 1991. Finally, it was accepted in parliament in 2006 for implementation in 625 different districts of India. This scheme is mainly implemented by gram panchayats and the involvement of contractors to that is banned. It is also helping in many different schemes which include protecting the environment, empowering rural women, reducing rural-urban migration and so on.
Thus, we can say that NREGA is an important scheme for the unskilled rural task force to make them employed. It is providing them with a minimum of 100 days employment so that it can reduce their financial burden. This will ultimately help them to develop themselves in many different sectors of their life in a balanced manner. An even rural population will be uplifted by the successful implementation of this scheme.
